Got Gear? 4 Picks to Enhance Your Cargo Carrier
Accessory recommendations to get the most out of your cargo carrier.
Built to expand your hauling capacity without sacrificing leg room, cargo carriers allow you to transport 120 pounds of I-can’t-fit-it-anywhere-gear to your destination. But to transport it, you’ve got to keep it contained and secure.
When it comes to accessorizing your cargo carrier, there are a lot of options out there. That’s why we turned to our resident cargo carrier expert, and bike rack Category Manager, Kellen Pagel, for insight.
An avid mountain biker, he spends a lot of time on the road exploring new trails with bikes, gear, and passengers, both human and canine, in tow. Keep reading for his recommendations.
Cargo Carrier Accessories
The Waterproof Case
While technically a drum case, this iSeries 4213-13 SKB case is a perfect fit for our cargo carriers. Need another option? Try the slightly smaller iSeries 3613-12.
“It’s a nice, waterproof space to put tools, riding gear and extra parts,” says Kellen. “This box has been a really, really nice addition to our trips and has allowed us to leave the roof box behind.”
The Cooler
Whether you’re camping, vacationing or simply in charge of this week’s soccer snack, chances are you’re traveling with a cooler. These keep-it-cold structures take up precious in-car space, which is why we prefer to tote ours on a cargo rack.
“The Yeti Tundra 125 is the perfect fit on Saris cargo carriers,” Kellen confirmed. “Really, any Yeti looks nice – and this is the largest one that fits.”
The Tie-Downs
If you’re transporting gear, then you’re going to need to secure it with tie-downs. That’s why both the SuperClamp EX 2-Bike + Cargo and Cargo Accessory feature raised side rails and tie-down points. Put them to use with Kellen’s recommendation, Rhino USA ratchet straps.
“The soft loop straps that come with this set really help get the Yeti cooler properly tied down, yet still be able to open the lid,” he said. “They might be a bit overkill for strapping down a cooler or cargo case, but they work really well.”
The Lightbar
Since 120 pounds of cargo capabilities can come in a variety of shapes, sizes and configurations, the last thing you should worry about is rear light visibility. That’s where the Lightbar accessory comes in.
“Knowing the Lightbar is signaling my movements on the road lets me quickly and efficiently load cargo, bikes or both,” said Kellen. “It’s hard to describe how such a simple cargo accessory can provide so much peace of mind.”
And it doesn't stop there...
Our cargo racks can carry so much more than gear, cases and coolers. Customers have called in to let us know what they’ve put on their cargo carrier, and below is a small sampling.
- Yard waste
- Bags of mulch
- Water softener salt
- Holiday trees
- Firewood. Lots of firewood.
